VALE JOHN “Harro” HARRISON

November 3, 2019

It is with deep regret and great tribute that we inform the Club that Dr John “Harro” Harrison has passed away having suffered a heart attack while walking near his property at Balmoral. We will miss him, a kinder, better person more caring doctor does not exist anywhere in the world.

Dr John Harrison served the Australian medical profession almost unceasingly since he graduated from Medical School; indeed, he had lived a life of concern for his colleagues on a daily basis.

At the same time, John represented Australia at Water Polo as an Olympic goalkeeper (52 caps for Australia), team manager and team doctor. He was a member of Universities Water Polo Club (which later merged with Sydney University Water Polo Club) and more recently The Wizards as a regular in M5 and M6. John was a regular supporter of the SU Blue & Gold water polo event.

During his career John has also maintained an active interest in water polo and open ocean swimming as a member of the Balmoral Beach Club.

All this, as well as running a highly successful private practice, along with many years of service as an honorary VMO in the NSW public hospital system.

Dr Harrison played a leading role in the 1984 Doctors’ Dispute and later accepted the position of Treasurer in the NSW AMA as part of a reform group. He subsequently went on to serve as a Director and Chairman of the ADF, Director of the Council of Procedural Specialists (COPS), and President of the Australian Orthopaedic Association, where he was awarded the L O Betts Medal for clinical excellence.

The former Australian water polo representative and long-time orthopedic surgeon has been recognised for his service to both fields and made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM), as part of the Queen's Birthday 2013 Honours List.

Both water polo and the medical profession in Australia will always remember the contribution made by John Harrison. No one could have a better soldier on their side, and there is no more deserving awardee of the Bruce Shepherd Medal for outstanding service to independent medicine.
We will remember “Harro” with happy thoughts, our mate, in the cage saving goals.
